5 Hollywood movies inspired by Bollywood

Everyone is familiar with Bollywood being inspired by Hollywood, but rarely do we hear about Hollywood movies that were inspired by Bollywood.

The Indian film industry is not only known for getting inspired by English movies but movies from other languages as well for example Salman Khan’s “Radhe”(2021) was inspired by the South Korean film “The Outlaws” (2017) and Mohit Suri’s “Ek Villain”(2014) was a remake of Korean film “I Saw the Devil”(2010).

However, exceptions are always there. A few Bollywood came up with a movie so well written and unique that it inspired Hollywood.

So, here is the list of 5 Hollywood movies that were inspired by the Bollywood films:

1. FEAR (1996) and DARR(1993) :

As obvious as it is, the name for the English remake of Bollywood’s ‘Darr’ was directly translated as “Fear” with the same story of the love triangle between the lead actors. Fear was directed by James Foley and written by Christopher Crowe. The lead characters were played by the actors Mark Wahlberg, Reese Witherspoon, Alyssa Milano. Apart from the name and story, the epic scene of Shahrukh Khan craving the name “Kiran” on his chest was also included in James Foley’s in his American thriller Fear when Mark Wahlberg craved the name “Nicole” on himself.

2. A COMMON MAN (2013) and A WEDNESDAY (2008):

Directed and produced by Sri Lankan filmmaker Chandran Rutnam, A Common Man is not only inspired by Bollywood’s A Wednesday but is an official remake claimed by Rutnam himself. Rutnam had to cast Academy winner Ben Kingsley to pull off Naseeruddin Shah’s character from 2008’s Neeraj Pandey’s masterpiece. The Indian film won several accolades and awards so, it makes sense that it caught the attention of other directors.

3. KILL BILL (2003) and ABHAY (2001):

This famous thriller by Quentin Tarantino had action sequences that were inspired by the Kamal Hassan starrer Abhay which was confirmed by Tarantino himself. However, the plot differs at some point. Abhay was also a Hindi remake of “Aalavandhan”, a Tamil film released in 2001 which starred Kamal Hassan as well.

4. HITCH (2005) and CHHOTI SI BAAT(1975):

Someone who has watched Hitch will automatically think that Bollywood movie Partner is a copy of Hitch. But not many know that Will Smith starrer Hitch itself is inspired by the plot of Chhoti Si Baat where a man who fails to impress a rich girl takes the help of someone who is a professional “Love Guru”. The English romantic comedy film is directed by Andy Tennant and had Will Smith, along with Eva Mendes, Kevin James, and Amber Valletta.

5. DELIVERY MAN (2013) and  VICKY DONOR(2012):

The basic idea of the film, sperm donation, has been inspired by a Bollywood hit starring Ayushmann Khurrana. A little bit of difference lies in the plot and the number of donations made by both characters. Both movies touched on the topic of “infertility” which no one wants to discuss openly. The 2013 American comedy-drama was written and directed by Ken Scott and the film stars Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt, and Cobie Smulders. However, both of the films are said to be inspired by the French-Canadian film, Starbuck.
