Dubai: First in the world to go 100% paperless

On December 11, the Emirates Crown prince, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad bin Rashin Ali Maktoum announced that Dubai has become the world’s first government to turn 100% paperless. All internal and external transactions and mechanisms in the Dubai government are 100 percent digital and handled using an extensive digital government services platform. He also pointed at savings of 1.3 billion Dirham and 14 million man-hours.

Sheikh Hamdan said, “The achievement of this target marks the beginning of a new stage in Dubai’s journey to digitize life in all its aspects, a journey rooted in innovation, creativity and a focus on the future”.

Dubai’s paperless strategy was implemented in five consecutive phases, each of which drafted a different group of Dubai government entities. Their strategy was fully implemented by the end of the fifth phase across all 45 government entities.

These entities grant more than 1800 digital services and over 10,500 key transactions. Collaboration with participating entities enabled the automation of processes and services provided to customers, cutting paper consumption by more than 336 million papers.

Hamdan also added, “This accomplishment also reinforces Dubai’s status as a world-leading digital capital and its status as a role model in designing government operations and services that enhance customer happiness.”

The Prince told that the government plans to implement advanced tactics and strategies to create and intensify digital life in Dubai over the next five decades.

The overall digital transformation in the Dubai Government will enhance the smart city experience for all the residents, completely removing the need and use for paper transactions and documentations, whether to hand out to the customers or any kind of exchange or transaction between employees across government entities.

Dubai Crown Prince said, “The new phase of Dubai’s digital journey will enable and empower future governments to meet the expectations of the residents of a thriving smart city and provide them with renewed opportunities for prosperity, sustainable development, and happiness”.
