Euphoric Moments From World Cup 2011 Finals

  1. MS Dhoni’s signature helicopter shot that finished off the game

One of the most iconic shots played in the history of cricket is that helicopter shot by MS   Dhoni on the final ball of the over that led India to the victory cup after 28 years.

  1. Ravi Shastri’s iconic commentary on the last ball six by Dhoni

“Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lifted the World Cup after 28 years!” – These were the words of the former cricketer and current coach of the Indian Cricket team which he screamed on top of his voice when Dhoni hit that last ball six into the crowd. Ravi Shastri’s iconic commentary is surely a part of our memories and it’s really difficult for any cricket fan to dissociate the winning shot of 2011 with the voice of Shastri in the background. Truly magical!

  1. Zaheer Khan’s 3 maidens over spell in the finals

The man who led India’s bowling attack in the tournament was another hero of that night of the final, whose contribution often gets neglected. But anyone who follows cricket religiously would never forget the magical 3 over maiden spell by Zaheer Khan that had put SriLanka’s batting attack on the backfoot at the beginning of the match.

  1. Gautam Gambhir’s brilliant contribution of 97 runs –

The most underrated knock of the tournament was Gambhir’s 97 run inning that got lost behind other performances in the tournament. The reason why Gambhir’s inning deserves the much-needed attention because it came at a time when both of the star openers, Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag went back to the pavilion without contributing much to the scoreboard and that too while chasing a big target. But Gambhir played well under pressure and took India out of the deep waters. It was not less than a heartbreak to see him dismissed at 97- just three runs short of scoring his century at the World Cup Finals.  However, everyone till that time knew that he had played probably the best ever knock of his career, and had scored the most valuable runs that led India to victory.

  1. Yuvraj’s prodigious performance in the game

How can one not talk about this man when it comes to World Cup 2011. He was tremendous in his performance throughout the tournament where he not only contributed with the bat but also took a couple of crucial wickets and exhibited exceptional fielding skills in almost every match that India played. His contribution to the team was over the top and exceptional and is one of the top contributors to India’s lifting the World Cup after 28 years.

  1. India became the 1st country to win the tournament on home soil.

Winning that final at Wankhede in Mumbai, India broke the age-old notion which was popular in the cricket world until then, “if you host, you don’t win’’, which was based on the fact that no country that was hosting an ICC tournament had won that tournament before, despite having the home advantage. But India became the first-ever country to do so and made another milestone in the history of cricket.

  1. Team India Carrying Sachin on the shoulders

Like all other surreal moments, the celebration part of the Indian Cricket Team too was entirely different. The pictures of young Indian players carrying the legend Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders while Sachin was waving the national flag is still alive in every cricket fan’s heart. When Virat Kohli was asked a question about it, he said “For 21 years He (Sachin) has carried the burden of India on his shoulders, It’s time that we carry him on our shoulders”.

This part of the celebration is very close to every Indian’s heart and is one of the many moments from the World Cup 2011, that everyone feels connected to.
