IITH & WiSig Develops First Indigenous 5G Technology

5G technology is essential for its potential to transform people’s lives around the world. In order to boost India’s 5G capabilities, and following the concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat, IIT Hyderabad and WiSig Networks have indigenously developed 5G wireless broadband technology for the first time.

The call was made using a multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) capable base station that backs 100MHz of bandwidth in the 3.3-3.5 GHz frequency band.

“This is a pivotal moment in indigenous 5G development. IIT Hyderabad and WiSig Networks have indigenously developed 5G wireless broadband technology for the first time, putting India at the forefront of 5G and beyond. Armed with these capabilities, India can become self-reliant in the design and manufacture of wireless broadband devices and play an increasingly important role in future generation technologies, products, and services”

Professor Kiran Kuchi, Dean(R&D), IITH

WiSig Network Private Limited is a flourishing Indian startup focused on developing 5G mobile communications products and solutions. Together IITH & WiSig have developed more than 100 5G patents and 15 of which have been declared as 3GPP 5G Standard Required Patents(SEPS) to telecom Standards Development Society(TSDSI).

“WiSig announces a range of ORAN(Open Radio Access Network)compliant 5G infra solutions, including small cells, massive MIMO macrocell DistributionUnit(DU) option 7.2x, integrated access backhaul (IAB) unit that supports mm-wave and sub 6 GHz frequency bands. These solutions and products are available for Indian wireless equipment manufacturers on licensing basis”

Dr, Sai Dhiraj, Principal Scientist at WiSig

If we see till date, India has imported 2G, 3G, and 4G all the three technologies. Even though the whole of technology, intellectual property, and design know-how was not available locally but still some of these wireless equipments were getting assembled in the country.
