Lucknow University’s Second-year Student Gets Elected Pradhan

Lucknow University’s BA LLB second year, 21-year-old Arushi Singh won the recently held Gram Sabha Pradhan election at village Seheriya, Wazirganj block in the Gonda district.

There were four contestants to the post and Arushi was declared the winner with 384 votes. She had support from her family who encouraged her to contest the election.

“It was like a dream come true. I was declared winner at around 1.30 pm and soon friends and relatives started calling,” said Arushi, who is pursuing the course from City Law College, an affiliate college of LU.

“Now it is my duty to make it a smart village with good internet connectivity and better public service,” she added.

“My grandmother, Vidyawati Singh won election to this post in 2000. And prior to her my great grandfather won election here. It is a small village of 1500 population. And they love us. I am happy to carry forward the family legacy,” said Arushi, according to the HT.

Her mother Garima Singh is a reader of district judge in civil court while father Dharmendra Singh is steno of the commissioner of police in Lucknow.

“Firstly I will focus on the education system for girls and boys and maintain the toilets with special emphasis on health and hygiene. I will focus on the improvement of the social and economic condition of people.”

“I will focus on the health, employment, infrastructure and the basic amenities like housing, drinking water and sanitation. I will ensure that the people of my village get to avail the benefits of all the schemes run by the centre and the state government,” she said, according to reports.

Not often, we see such victories, it is welcoming to celebrate a young woman in politics and that too at roots. The vision Arushi foresees for the village is modern and developmental. The country needs goal-oriented young people in politics at root levels — in villages. The country is need of visionary grassroots level development.
