Yet again Anand Mahindra is in the spotlight, his tweet came in response to a graphic tweeted by The Times of India involving the number of Indian medical students in foreign countries.
The graphic showed China at the top with 23000 Indian students there, followed by currently war-torn Ukraine with 18000 students.
Amidst the whole Ukraine situation, this graphic exposed India’s medical education system.
The Chairman of the Mahindra Group expressed concerns over the shortfall of medical colleges in India in the tweet. Further, he suggested considering the establishment of medical sciences institutions on the campus of Mahindra University.
I had no idea that there was such a shortfall of medical colleges in India. @C_P_Gurnani could we explore the idea of establishing a medical studies institution on the campus of @MahindraUni ? https://t.co/kxnZ0LrYXV

There are 88,120 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) seats and 27,498 Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) seats available in India and last year, 1.6 million candidates had registered for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) while the figure stood at 1.3 million, in 2020, this is according to the data shared by the Health Ministry in Lok Sabha in December 2021.
If we see the Central Government data, approximately 90 percent of the 18095 stranded Indian students in Ukraine are studying to become doctors. These students walked miles to Poland & other neighboring countries to reach the evacuation points. Thousands of students got evacuated by the Government of India but there are still students left there, living in fear.
