Harmanpreet Kaur: The First Indian To Win Player of Tournament at WBBL

Playing her very first season, India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been named the Player of the Tournament in the Women’s Big Bash League 2021. This has made her the first player from the country to do so, as she won the title with 31 votes, beating rivals Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney of Perth Scorchers by a margin of 3.

Playing the tournament for Melbourne Renegades, Kaur scored 399 runs off 15 innings with three half-centuries and also holds the record of most sixes (18) at WBBL 2021. She also picked up 15 wickets in 12 innings with an impressive economy of 7.46 on returning to the Melbourne tournament after a two-year absence. Harmanpreet Kaur’s crucial performance with the ball in the powerplay overs has been crucial for the Renegades in absence of spinner Georgia Wareham. The win is also a comeback for her given her recent struggling stints for the Indian camp.

In a release, Kaur says that she is eager for the women’s IPL and talks about how the WBBL is an important tournament and is an aspiration for many to be included in the league. “Playing any tournament will give you lots of confidence and WBBL is something, you know, it’s a very, very big platform back home”, she says. She joins New Zealand’s Devine (who has won the honor twice) and Amy Satterthwaite as the other international players along with previous recipients with Mooney, Meg Lanning, and Ellyse Perry.

Along with Harmanpreet, Phoebe Litchfield of Sydney Thunder was named Weber WBBL|07’s ‘Young Gun’, and award which is given to the best player under 21 years of age, as per the selections of the Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel.
