BCCI likely to start a six-team women’s IPL in 2023

The BCCI is likely to organise a full-fledged women’s IPL season by 2023. Earlier discussions were made to start women’s IPL. The idea to start the women’s IPL tournament was discussed at the GC meeting on Friday (March 25). According to sources, the existing IPL teams will be given a choice to their teams.

This time, the BCCI will again be organising exhibition matches. The women’s matches couldn’t be done in 2021 due to pandemics. Earlier in 2018 one match was conducted by BCCI while 4 matches were played in 2019 and 2020.

Many women cricketers also have supported the idea of organising a full-fledged IPL and the league is likely to kick start by next year. As of now, the tournament will be a six-team event.

Additionally, the England Cricket Board and Cricket Australia have already organised a full-fledged league for women cricketers. As of our the Indian women cricketers have been part of ECB’s The Hundred as well as CA’s Women’s Big Bash League.

Top overseas players have plied their trade in BCCI’s exhibition matches and their count is likely to increase from next year. This year’s exhibition matches are probably being played in Pune.

Meanwhile, the BCCI hasn’t decided on the play matches venue for IPL 2022.
