Shivani Agarwalla: The First Indian Woman Athlete To Win A Gold In Kettlebell World Championships

Meet Shivani Agarwalla, whose journey with sports began as a mere way of losing weight but turned into a passion.

Shivani is an international kettlebell athlete, a practicing chartered accountant, a mother, and a wife.

Her journey started with the pursuit of loose her post-partum weight. For which she joined the gym after her husband suggested her to do so. At the gym only, she came across this beautiful piece of equipment called a kettlebell. And for the sake of recreation, she joined kettlebell classes at the gym. But work pressure didn’t let her continue that.

Call it destiny or luck, one fine day her mentor called her and offered to train her at home and how could she deny that offer. So she immediately took the offer and started training with kettlebells at home. Maybe her mentor saw some spark in her, something that no one had discovered until then. Gradually her mentor made her realize that she was made for bigger things.

She trained, trained, and trained. At first, she represented India at the Asian Championship 2017. Which led to representing India in the World Championships in Uzbekistan in 2018 to Australia in 2019 to France in 2022. India saw in her its first women athlete to get gold in Kettlebell World Championship and its first women athlete to get hattrick gold in France in 2021.

Earlier this year on March 28, 2022, Shivani’s father received a Letter Of Appreciation from the Prime Minister Of India congratulating him on her daughter’s achievement and recognizing her contribution to the nation.

To those who don’t know about Kettlebell Sport, Kettlebell lifting is a repetitive weightlifting sport performed with kettlebells in a given period of time. It has a long history in Russia and eastern Europe but it developed as an organized, standard sport under the name ‘Kettlebell’ lifting during the 1960s and is now seeing a surge in interest and participation worldwide.
