President Kovind appoints Justice NV Ramana as the next CJI President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India. He will take oath on April 24 as the next Chief Justice of India after the retirement of the incumbent CJI SA Bobde on April 23. Last month, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor. “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th April, 2021,” an official notification said. Justice Ramana who is born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district on August 27, 1957, will be the country’s top judge for a year and four months, till August 26, 2022. After Justice K Subba Rao who was the ninth Chief Justice of India from 1966–67, Justice Ramana will be the second CJI from Andhra Pradesh In his nearly four-decade-long career, Justice Ramana “has practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, service and election matters. He has specialised in constitutional, criminal, service and inter-state river laws,” as per his profile on the official website of the Supreme Court. He was “appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. He functioned as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013, to May 20, 2013,” it further reads. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 2013 and as a judge in the top court in 2014. Justice Ramana has been part of several landmark cases and judgments. In 2020, he was part of the bench that passed the order to restore internet access in J&K after the scrapping of special status under Article 370. In 2016, he was part of the bench that ruled the quashing of the Arunachal Pradesh government’s decision to prepone the Assembly session. And the recent judgment where the court said that the value of a woman’s work at home was not less than that of the husband in the office.
