Recently, devotees taking a dip in the frothy and foaming waters of Yamuna on the occasion of Chath Puja made it to the news and brought the discussions on the issue of over pollution of water bodies back to the table. The toxic foaming covered almost a 22-km stretch of the river and was declared unfit for irrigation or consumption. The Delhi Jal Board had also formulated plans to sprinkle water in the Yamuna to keep the toxic froth away. However, a stark different picture to this was posted by the Ministry of Jal Shakti portraying one of the cleanest rivers in the world, which also lies in India! Meghalaya’s Umngot River The river in the picture is the Umngot River, which is located at a distance of about 100 km from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong. The picture shows a boat carrying five persons that almost seems to be flying mid-air given the extremely clean and transparent water that you can see the green rocks on the riverbed! The tweet read “One of the cleanest rivers in the world. It is in India. River Umngot, 100 Kms from Shillong, in Meghalaya state. It seems as if the boat is in the air; the water is so clean and transparent. Wish all our rivers were as clean. Hats off to the people of Meghalaya” has since then been going viral. People have applauded the efforts of the people in keeping the river sparkling clean and have asked the authorities to take initiatives in ensuring that the other rivers of the country are also this clean. Conditions of India’s Rivers Reports reveal that almost 70% of India's water is severely polluted because of the dumping of raw sewage, silt and garbage into the rivers and lakes and is unfit for consumption. The Ganga and the Yamuna find themselves within the 10 most polluted rivers in the world. An estimated 1.5 million children die from diarrhea every year due to polluted water and over 40% of the population may not have access to clean water by 2030. The concerning numbers call for immediate measures on the part of the authorities as well as the people to take steps towards water conservation. Ministry of Jal Shakti The Government of India created the Ministry of Jal Shakti in 2019 with the goal of holistic and integrated water resources management. It also looks after sanitation and the safe disposal of wastes. An initiative under the Ministry is the National Water Mission, which has taken up the tasks of conservation of water, minimizing wastage, and ensuring its more equitable distribution both across and within States through integrated water resources development and management. Efficient and successful implementation of such incentives is the way forward for a sustainable and healthy future.
