After being delayed due to the COVID-19, the wait is over and Olympic 2020 has already started in Japan’s capital Tokyo. The Olympics opening ceremony occurred on 23rd July 2021. As the Covid-19 cases continue to rise, the athletes had to do the parade in a new empty stadium. According to the Tokyo 2020 organizers, 950 people attended the opening ceremony. The audience was banned from the respective ceremony due to the pandemic going on. French President Emmanuel Macron and US first lady Jill Biden attended the event as well. Unfortunately, 17 new Covid-19 cases were announced as 14 athletes and 34 “Games- concerned personnel” have tested positive in Tokyo’s Olympic Village. However, the names or nationalities of those athletes were not revealed. Let’s look at the special moments and achievements in the Olympics 2021 so far: •JULY 23, 2021: The first day of the Olympics made China win the first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics. China’s Yang Qian won gold in women’s 10m air rifle. On the other hand, Russian Anastasiia Galashina secured the silver medal. However, Russian athletes aren’t competing under their national name at the Olympics. Instead, they are officially recognized as members of ROC, an abbreviation of the Russian Olympic Committee. Switzerland’s Nina Christen got bronze. Netherland’s rowers Finn Florjin and Surfer Frederico Morais were ruled out of the Olympics after he tested positive for COVID-19 in Japan. Four-time champion Naomi Osaka was picked as the final torchbearer of the 2020 Games to deliver a message of “diversity and inclusion”. If we look at the state of India in the Tokyo Olympics on 23rd July, India began its journey with Deepika Kumari. Under the category of Archery, Deepika Kumari moved into the elimination round under Women’s Individual Ranking Round. She finished ninth with 663 points. In Men’s Individual Ranking Round, Pravin Jadhav placed 31st as the best-ranked Indian with 656 points. Furthermore, India secured ninth in the mixed team rankings as well with a total score of 1319. •JULY 24, 2021: As per the second day of the ceremony, India’s ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened India’s medals tally as she secured a silver in the Women’s 49 kg category. Mirabai lifted a total of 202kg during her four successful attempts in the competition. Tennis player Sumit Nagal won against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin and his win was the first for an Indian men’s singles tennis player since Leander Paes’s bronze medal-winning at Atlanta 1996. Unfortunately, Manika Batra, Vikas Krishan are out of Tokyo 2020 after losing their opening match against Japan’s Sewonrets Okazawa. China’s Zhihui Hou created a new Olympic record as he won gold with a total of 210kg while Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah grabbed bronze with a total of 194kg. Judoka Takato won Japan’s 1st gold in Tokyo Olympics. He claimed victory over Yang Yung-Wei of Taiwan in the men’s under 60kg Judo final. China’s Yang Qian won the women’s 10-meter air rifle and captured her first gold medal at the ceremony. On the other hand, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed that Japan will pass on its duty of hosting a “safe and secure Olympics” being held in the middle of a pandemic to France, host of the 2024 Summer Games. •JULY 25,2021: Mary Kom kick-started her Tokyo Olympic journey with a win over Miguelina Hernandez of the Dominican Republic but boxer Manish Kaushik lost to Great Britain’s Luke McCormack. Under the category of Badminton, PV Sindhu beat Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova in her first match at Tokyo 2020. However, Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina’s Tokyo Olympics campaign came to an end after the duo lost their opening match to Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok and Lydumyla Kichenok. The Indian men’s hockey team lost to Australia in their second group match as Dilpreet Singh scored India’s only goal. Japan’s Judoka Hifumi Abe and sister Uta become 1st Japanese Olympic medalist. Chase Kalisz of the US won the men’s 400-meter individual medley final of the Tokyo Olympics as well. While men’s golf world No.1 Jon Rahm of Spain and No.6 Bryson DeChambeau of the US will both miss the Olympics after testing positive for the COVID-19. The International Olympic Committee announced its relaxed COVID-19 protocols at the Tokyo Olympics to allow medalists to take off their masks for up to 30 seconds on the podium as the photographs will be taken.
