About Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a domestic Twenty20 cricket championship in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, among the teams from Ranji Trophy. It is named after the famous Indian test cricketer, Syed Mushtaq Ali. Tamil Nadu is the current champion of the format. In 2006-2007 Tamil Nadu won the inaugural season of the trophy under the captaincy of Dinesh Karthik. In June 2016, the BCCI scrapped and replaced it with a zonal-based competition. The very next season, the BCCI reverted to include all the domestic teams. Format 38 teams divided into five Elite groups, namely A, B, C, D, E, comprising six teams each. Here, one plate group with eight teams. Each team plays a total of five league matches. Winners and Runners up of each Zone qualify for the knockout stage. Lucknow will host Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Group A matches from November 4–9, 2021. On November 4, Tamil Nadu will play against Maharashtra, Punjab will take on Pondicherry and Odisha will lock horns with Goa. On November 5, Punjab will play against Maharashtra, TN will take on Odisha and Goa will lock horns with Pondicherry. Further, on November 6, matches between Punjab and Goa, TN and Pondicherry, and Odisha and Maharashtra will take place. Similarly, TN will play against Goa, while Punjab and Maharashtra will take on Odisha and Pondicherry, respectively. On November 9, three matches (Odisha vs Pondicherry, Maharashtra vs Goa and Punjab vs TN) will take place.
