In a relief for people with disabilities, the Ministry of Social justice and Empowerment has issued a gazette and made it mandatory for disability certificates to be issued online.
“Mandatory for all states/UTs to grant a certificate of disability through online mode only using UDID portal with effect from June 1. States/UTs have been advised for compliance,” the ministry’s disability affairs department tweeted.
What is the Unique ID for Persons with Disabilities” project?
The “Unique ID for Persons with Disabilities” project is being implemented with the view of creating a National Database for PwDs, and to issue a Unique Disability Identity Card to each person with disabilities. The project will not only encourage transparency, efficiency and ease of delivering the government benefits to the person with disabilities, but also ensure uniformity. The project will also help in streamlining the tracking of the physical and financial progress of beneficiary at all levels of the hierarchy of implementation – from village level, block level, District level, State level and National level.
For people with disabilities, a disability certificate is a necessity as they can avail the benefits of different government schemes by furnishing the document.
The Centre has made it mandatory for all States and UTs to issue the certificate of disability through online mode from next month. The certificate will be issued only using the Unique Disability ID portal. The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has issued a Gazette notification in this regard. The Department of Health and Department dealing with disability matters in States and UTs have been advised to take immediate steps to ensure compliance of this notification.
The sep ensures complete digitization of certification of disability besides providing a viable mechanism for cross-checking the genuineness of the certificate to achieve pan-India validity and simplifying the process for the benefit of Divyangjan.
