Hitman turns 34: A look at Rohit Sharma’s Life outside the stadium

Charismatic, skilful and ace player of the Indian cricket team – Rohit Sharma turned 34 today and wishes poured in for the legend, from India as well as abroad. The official Twitter account of the International Cricket Council wished the batsman by posting a video of him playing for India in the 2007 world cup. It was captioned as-

“ Could watch this all day. Happy birthday to the master of the pull shot, @ImRo45

It is no doubt that Rohit Sharma is an exceptional player on the field. A recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award and various other accolades of the sporting world, 34-year-old Sharma opens for India across the T20 and ODI formats and leads the Mumbai Indians franchise in the Indian Premier League. But apart from his cricketing career, Sharma’s life is full of other achievements and involvements too. So, let’s explore the other side of the cricketer:

  • He is a sports celebrity and a nature lover. He is very fond of nature and animals and has been involved in philanthropic work for a long time. In 2019, Rohit Shama launched the ‘Rohit4Rhinos’ campaign with an aim to create awareness for the conservation of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, a.k.a. the Indian Rhino. He did it in partnership with WWF India and Animal Planet. In a campaign launched on Animal Planet to honour World Rhino Day on September 22, Rohit Sharma committed to doing his bit in saving vulnerable species from extinction.
  • Last year, when the pandemic struck the entire country, Sharma donated ₹80 lakh to fight the rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak. He said the onus is on citizens to help the country get back up on its feet. Sharma donated ₹45 lakh to the PM CARES Fund (Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund) and ₹25 lakh to Chief Ministers’ Relief Fund in Maharashtra. Apart from this he also spread awareness and urged people through his social media channels to mask up, sanitize their hands, and practice social distancing, in order to contain the virus.
  • Rohit Sharma is very vocal about animal rights and their protection. His love for them became evident last year during the covid-19 pandemic when he gave ₹5 lakh to help aid stray dogs from the streets.
  • During the Nationwide lockdown last year due to the 1st wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India, Rohit Sharma donated ₹5 lakh to ‘Zomato Feeding India’, which was helping families affected by the ongoing national lockdown. It is known that Sharma was also brought up in a lower-middle-class family setup and faced financial problems while growing up.
  • According to a report published in republicworld.com, in 2008, Rohit drew everyone’s attention towards the harmful consequences of plastic in oceans and marine life. He also lauded a Mumbai-based lawyer Afroz Shah, who played a key role in cleaning up a place where more than 15 million kg of plastic was disposed of. Rohit Sharma visited the beach on his own and helped clean it and appealed to people to do the same.
  • Rohit Sharma’s recent shoe activism was applauded by many animal rights advocates in the world, where he sported a unique design of his IPL cricket shoes which showcased the endangered Indian Rhino species on them. Posting a picture on Twitter of him getting on the field while wearing the shoes and practicing his batting stance, he wrote – “Yesterday when I walked onto the field it was more than just a game for me. Playing cricket is my dream and help make this world a better place is a cause we all need to work towards.”

He further added – “It was special for me to take a cause so close to my heart with me on the field while I do what I love. Every step matters.”

Praising the class and quality of Rohit Sharma’s batting, former legendary Australian batter Mathew Hayden had once said- “Don’t commit your crimes when Rohit is batting, you’d hardly have any time”
