Lucknow’s 15 days khadi festival and silk expo is all about handicrafts

India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav – a series of 75 week-long programmers that started on March 12th this year to commemorate 75th Independence Day on August 15, 2023. Among these festivities, a 15-day Khadi Festival and Silk Expo 2021 is ongoing in Lucknow currently. The event is taking place at the Indira Gandhi Pratishtran in Gomti Nagar, and was kickstarted on Saturday, October 16, and will continue until October 30. It is being organized by Uttar Pradesh Khadi and Village Industries Board and Silk Department.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the event, took stock of the exhibits and interacted with the producers at the event. Checks, loan approval certificates and state-level awards to the beneficiaries of Pandit Deendayal Khadi Marketing Development Assistance Scheme, Mukhyamantri Gramodyog Rozgar Yojana and other programmes were also presented. Cabinet Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said that Khadi has been a symbol of freedom and now Khadi is also becoming a symbol of fashion. “We are working towards the goal of taking Khadi from door to door with the inspiration of Chief Minister Yogi  Adityanath.”

Apart from the Khadi exclusive products, there is also a plethora of swadeshi items to be found. Displays also include wooden utensils and carved furniture from Saharanpur, designer koti and sadri from the Clothing Village Industries of Dehradun, bed sheets and towels from Muzaffarnagar, pickles and murabba from the Sapna Village Industries in Pratapgarh and much more at affordable rates.

The expo is also a silk haven with an array of silk products, sarees and designer clothes, weaved in Mulberry, Tussar and Eri are showcased here. An engaging session on all about silk culture or sericulture, to understand the entire process of how a piece of fabric comes into existence can also be enjoyed by visitors here. The state has flourishing sericulture as in total 57 districts of Uttar Pradesh 3 different types of silk are produced while the silk consumption of the state is 3 thousand metric tonnes and the production is at 300 metric tonnes.

The exhibition has come right at the prime time for Lucknowites at the time to upgrade the interiors of their home. With an exquisite furniture range and items including bed sheets, lamps and chandeliers, crockery, ceramic pots, sculptures to a range of apparel and accessories including Khadi sarees, shirts, kurta, pyjama, sadri and even jute coats are available at this expo. Various types of handbags, purses, belts, shoes, sandals from Kanpur’s local leather cluster can also be found at this all-inclusive one-stop shopping expo. there is a lot here that you can use to decorate your home. To light up your Diwali celebrations, get your hands on handcrafted designer clay diyas and designer scented candles.
