Met Gala: Revisiting the Relevant fashion looks of all time

One of the most prestigious and much-awaited fashion events — Met Gala– is finally here. The Costume Institute answered the highly anticipated question this week. Whether the event will be happening or not. As last year it was halted due to the ongoing pandemic. Well, the answer is YES!!. This year’s event will be sponsored by Instagram, consisting of two exhibitions, each with its own individual focus. Both will keep in line with the overarching theme of American fashion. The first part, which is titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” and the second instalment, i.e, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” will break down the timeline of American fashion “by presenting narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces,” according to a statement released by the storied art institution.

The event which takes place on the first Monday of May got us thinking about all the iconic celebrity looks of the Met Gala. So, let’s take a walk down the memory lane to refresh our memories with the looks/ dresses that were so impressive and are still considered chic, edgy with perfectly fitting the year’s theme at the same time.

Naomi Campbell 1995 (Haute Couture)

The real OG supermodel setting everyone’s eyes blazing when she arrived in a classic sparkling disco Versace gown. Naomi has always been known for her bold take on fashion. The dress along with her perfectly done hair definitely made her way ahead from the ’90s. To this day Naomi’s iconic 1995 Met Gala dress is much talked about.

Beyonce 2015 (China: Through the Looking Glass)

All thanks to Givenchy, the mastermind behind Beyonce sheer style on the red carpet. The see-through dress was so perfectly embellished with glittering rhinestones in all the right places hiding her modesty along with nude ankle-strapped pumps, pairing it with a high ponytail. The year 2015 was a time when the sheer style phenomena kicked in. It was Beyonce who took this trend into mainstream media. Plus it fit well with the theme, unlike other celebrities.

Cara Delevinge 2017 (Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between)

A sci-fi fantasy coming to real life. Cara showed up with a buzzcut head with metallic paint on it adding an edge to her look. Plus the brocade Chanel suit from the Spring 2017 couture collection brought the required touch of futurism, elegance and chic. Cara is known to slay look year after year at Met Gala.

Claire Danes 2016 (Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology)

The minute she appeared on the red carpet she established herself as the real-life Cinderella with her glow-in-the-dark Zac Posen gown. A nicely tailored silhouette in the sky blue instantly grabbed everyone’s attention plus making headlines all over the world.

Lupita Nyong’o 2019 (Camp: Notes on Fashion)

The 2019 Met gala saw many celebrities giving the best look at the camp, but it was Lupita who gave a much-needed message on black lives in America through her dress. She celebrated black art and culture with her Versace avant-garde. A star-pattern pink dress with rainbow-coloured wing inspired shoulders along with a matching purse. As for her hair, her hairstylist Vernon Francois drew inspiration from artist Lauren Kelley’s “Pickin’. She made it into a towering afro on the red carpet with five golden picks positioned throughout it. Her reason behind the look was how beautiful, luxurious afro is and should be celebrated.

Lady Gaga 2019 (Camp: Notes on Fashion)

The mother monster made sure people remember her iconic look for the rest of the time, for the first time in met gala history lady gaga has 4 outfits changed right in front of people. She made her 2019 debut in an over-the top hot pink Brandon Maxwell gown, complete with a cascading train and a giant matching bow on her head. This followed by a second look, removing her giant pink cape to reveal an all-black off-shoulder gown, completing it with a matching umbrella. As for the third look, she revealed a hot pink gown complete with a giant black cell phone bag, ending it with the last look where strip down to her bra & underwear with fishnet while accessorizing it with a hot pink wagon full of rosé and pink cowboy hats.

Kim Kardashian herself said she starts preparing for the Met gala the minute theme of the next one is announced. This year she was channelling Sophia Lauren in her memorable Thierry Mugler wet look. She was wearing a nude, body-hugging Mugler dress that made her waist so tight making it look like it’s barely there, dripping in beads and sequins. Kim is one of those celebrities who always take the theme seriously and dress accordingly.

Blake Lively 2018 (Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination)

The winner of Met Gala 2018 hands down will be Blake Lively. She wore a rich crimson Versace gown with detailed embroidery all over the gown along with a jewel-encrusted bodice with an impressive train. She accessorized the outfit with a pair of shiny emerald earrings, and choose to pile her signature blonde hair in a braided updo atop her head highlighting it with a halo-Esque headpiece.

Priyanka Chopra 2018 (Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination)

The desi girl knows how to set the eyes popping at a prestigious event like this through her fashion statements. She appeared wearing a deep burgundy velvet gown along with a beautifully embedded gold beaded hood, which she paired with minimal Cartier jewellery. The most intriguing part is that the hood took almost 250 hours to hand bead. The piece was made entirely with red Swarovski crystals and gold beading.
