Mumbai’s Central Railway won the esteemed environment and cleanliness shield for having the maximum number of eco-friendly stations in the Indian Railways.
It has also won the shield for other measures taken to achieve sustainability goals.
The shield was presented to Mumbai’s Central Railway at the 66th National Railway Award 2021.
Mumbai Central Railway has a maximum of 87 Eco-smart stations. It has received an ISO certificate for 87% of its Eco smart stations till December 2021.
The National Green Tribunal has awarded these stations the eco-smart tag, some of them include Bhandup, Ambarnath, Ambivli, Byculla, etc.
From the entire list of eco-smart tag stations, most of the units have got the Indian Green Building Council(IGBC) gold certification.

The International Standardisation Organisation(ISO) certificate has been achieved by 76 stations of the central railway.

This doesn’t end here, it has also obtained consent from the Central Pollution Control Board under the Water Act and Air Act for 74 stations out of 87 eco-smart stations.
“ CR has been instrumental in setting up a large number of renewable energy solar and wind energy plants and self-sustainable green stations. It has also been successful in fitting 100% of its coaches with bio-toilets thus ensuring hygiene and preventing corrosion of tracks”

Mumbai Central Railway has carried out various plantation drives and used around 106 hectares of railway land for plantations.
They have opened 15 nurseries with 25 lakh saplings in the last six years which includes three Miyawaki plantations and herbal gardens which have helped in reducing carbon footprint and also securing spare railway land.
