While we are not even a week into the Tokyo Olympics, we have already seen a lot of chaos from athletes withdrawing out of the games to seeing Martyna Trajdos’s coach shaking her and slapping her across the face to try to fire her up. However, it was nothing serious according to her. The 6th day of the Summer Games went by and let’s look at some of the unexpected things occurring at Tokyo 2020: Martyna Trajdos’s coach shaking her and slapping her TTFI to take action against Manika Batra for refusing national coach’s help: Soumyadeep Roy is a 2006 Commonwealth Games team event gold medalist and Arjuna Awardee, he is the only coach who has travelled with India’s four-member team to the Olympics 2020. However, Batra wanted to have a personal coach court-side during all the matches. Furthermore, the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI ) called her decision to not consider the national coach Soumyadeep Roy as an “act of indiscipline”. Batra’s personal coach Sanmay Paranajpe was also at the games but he was only allowed to train with her and her request for his Field of Play access was denied by the organizers. “It is surely an act of indiscipline. She should have let the national coach sit court-side during her matches just like other players did. The Executive Board will meet soon virtually and decide on the action against her for this indiscipline”, told TTFI secretary general Arun Kumar Banerjee to PTI from Tokyo. Indian Tennis player G.Sathiyan also chose to train with his personal coach but the national coach Roy was sitting on Sathiyan’s side, unlike Batra. “Manika played well and we are proud of her achievements but she did wrong by not having Roy by her side", added Banerjee. Olympics pride- Erica Sullivan making history and embodied her identity Erica Sullivan made history as she earned the silver medal in the first women’s 1500-meter freestyle in Olympic history. She is behind world record holder Katie Ledecky. However, she charmed the whole arena with her funny personality and shocked local reporters with her fluent Japanese even after being identified as an American. She also mentioned her being part of the LGBTQ community confidently, all while wearing and showing off her silver medal around her neck. In the press conference afterwards, she mentioned how she did it in a country that she frequently visited as a child, and for clarity, her other is a Japanese citizen living in America on a green card. “Just me getting to be on the Podium, in Japan, as an Asian American woman and getting to take silver in a historical women’s event for the first time, as someone who likes women and who identifies as gay- it is so cool. It’s awesome”, she said in the press conference. Sullivan came out as publicly gay in 2017. She told the press conference that she is the “epitome of an American person”. “I'm multicultural. I’m queer. I’m a lot of minorities. That’s what America is. The American dream is coming to a country to be able to establish what you want to do with your life”, she added. Nevertheless, behind the funny personality, there is a 20-year-old hard-working woman who persevered through obstacles to become one of the top distance swimmers in the world. Title Nine writes a $1M check for the U.S. Women’s Soccer team who are still underpaid: Women’s apparel company Title Nine’s CEO Missy Park wrote a $1M check to the U.S. Women’s Soccer team as soon as she got to know that they were being underpaid. It is the largest donation the players have ever received. “I was just getting so mad. Yes, with U.S. Soccer, but also a little bit with myself. Maybe I can't do everything, but I can do something”, she said. On Wednesday, Title Nine announced it is making a $1M donation. The women’s team won all six games and the men’s did not, nor did they qualify for the Olympics. However, even when the USWNT is projected to medal in Tokyo, they were still getting paid less than the men’s team. According to Park, the goal is not to make a few headlines just once but to make a difference and get equal pay for women in sports. Title Nine’s donations went directly into player’s pockets. “We want them to take that money and do with it as they please,'' added Park. Sam Kendricks What’s more? Simon Biles mentioned that huge support has made her realize that she is “more than my accomplishments and gymnastics”. PV Sindhu entered the quarter-finals and will compete against Yamaguchi further. Indian Boxer Pooja Rani entered quarters, along with Deepika Kumari in the third round. Tokyo Olympics can be the hottest Olympic Games ever as Tokyo’s temperature keeps on rising day by day and the heat can be more challenging for Paralympics occurring in August.
