The Celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence begins with Amrit Mahotsav

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Amrit Mahotsav to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence. The day marks an important day in the history of India as on this day, 91 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi started his Dandi March or Salt Satyagraha protesting against the British colonial rulers’ monopoly on the production of salt. On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi had led a group of 80 freedom fighters on a 24-day Salt Satyagraha, a nonviolent civil disobedience movement against the British.

Commemorating the day, PM Modi flagged off a 386-kilometre march, ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, from the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to Dandi in Navsari district. The ‘Dandi March’ of 2021 will end on April 5, after 25 days. The ‘Mahotsav’ will be celebrated as a ‘Jan-Utsav’ in the spirit of ‘Jan-Bhagidari’.

Addressing a gathering near Abhay Ghat, PM Modi said, “Today’s Amrit Mahotsav programme begins from Sabarmati Ashram, from where the Dandi March began. The march had a key role in furthering a spirit of pride and Aatmanirbhar Bharat among India’s people. Going ‘Vocal For Local’ is a wonderful tribute to Bapu and our great freedom fighters.” The Prime Minister also visited the Sabarmati Ashram and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

The government of states and UT also organized various cultural programmes all over the country to mark the Mahotsav.

‘Five pillars to inspire the country’

While speaking at Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav in Ahmedabad, PM Modi said, “Today is the first day of the Amrit Mahotsav of independence. This Mahotsav has started 75 weeks before 15th August 2022 and will run till 15th August 2023.”

“Freedom Struggle, Ideas at 75, Achievements at 75, Actions and Resolves at 75- these five pillars will inspire the country to move forward,”

“We are all fortunate that we are witnessing this historic period of independent India. Today, on the anniversary of the Dandi Yatra Yatra, we are also seeing history being made at this karmic site of Bapu and also becoming a part of history,” he added.

“When we think of the era of British rule when crores of people were waiting for Independence, it makes the celebration of 75 years of Independence even more important,” said PM Modi.

‘Will show the right path to the world’

PM Modi urged that all the schools and colleges should include at least 75 remarkable events from our freedom struggle and requested them to do so by August 15 this year. He further said that no citizen should be deprived of the celebration.

Stressing on the Atamnirbhar Bharat campaign PM says, “Every person in this country will be Atmanirbhar and we will show the right path to this world.”

Furthermore, talking about the indigenously manufactured COVID-19 vaccines, he said, “India’s self-reliance in vaccine manufacturing has proved beneficial for the entire world. The achievements of India are not only our own today, but they are going to show light to the whole world.”

Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav will see a series of events organised by the central government to memorialise the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence. A National Implementation Committee headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been appointed to plan out policies and outline various events to be undertaken under the Mahotsav. The curtain raiser activities began on March 12.
