The Filmy Glamour: The Evergreen Cannes Debut of Bollywood Actresses

It is not an unknown fact that the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival has given the world some of the best fashion moments. For more than seven decades, we have seen the world’s most celebrities and supermodels creating history with their unique designer outfits. There were many iconic moments every time Bollywood actresses such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra, strut their stuff on the infamous Cannes’s red carpet with their exceptional style. 

After being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 74th Cannes Film Festival is occurring in 2021 so, let’s rewind and look at what these Bollywood divas wore to their Cannes red carpets debuts :


•AISHWARYA RAI:  After winning the crown of Miss World in 1994 and being one of the most famous actresses in India, she made her first appearance at Cannes in the Year 2002. The actress lighted up the red carpet wearing an embellished bright yellow Neeta Lulla saree. Her traditional style was loved by critics as she flaunted her looks with heavy gold jewellery. With each passing year, Aishwarya’s fashion choices have evolved, and the style icon has surprised us with her stunning looks at Cannes.


•DEEPIKA PADUKONE: The Mastaani of Bollywood dazzled in an ivory gold Rohit Bal saree during 2010’s Cannes Film Festival. She walked the anticipated event as the brand ambassador of Chivas Regal. The actress’s gold jewellery and the gold clutch were cherries on top during her Cannes debut.


•PRIYANKA CHOPRA: Bollywood’s Desi Girl greeted the crowd and cameras with a Namaste in her glittering strapless gown during her Cannes debut in 2019. The actress wore a shimmering black dress with a thigh-high slit by Roberto Cavalli. Her makeup was on point with winged eyeliner and berry lipstick. Priyanka’s diamond necklace and long earrings made her one of the most talked-about style icons of the event as she managed to make heads turn with her confidence.


•KATRINA KAIF: The British-Indian beauty, Katrina Kaif made her first Cannes red carpet appearance in 2015. She attended the premiere of the French film “La Tete Haute”. The actress wore American designer Oscar De La Renta’s black off-shoulder gown and looked gorgeous with her side-swept red hair adorning soft curls. She completed the look with a pair of teardrop diamond earrings and a thin diamond bracelet.


•SONAM KAPOOR: Known as a true fashionista over the years, Sonam impressed everyone with her Cannes red carpet debut in 2011. The actress wore a Jean Paul Gaultier gown, which was paired with Chopard earrings and Ferragamo shoes. She looked gorgeous as the gown complimented her figure well. Attending the premiere of the movie “The Artist” at the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival, she stunned one and all.


•KANGANA RANAUT: Kangana made her Cannes debut in 2018 and she channelled retro-chic in her black Sabyasachi saree. Her look made headlines after her appearance for an India Pavilion event at Cannes. She even had a discussion with Central Board of Film Certification(CBFC) Chairman Prasoon Joshi on women in Indian films.


•SHRUTI HASSAN: Shruti Hassan, who was at 2017’s Cannes to promote her film Sangamithra, stunned people with her black Avaro Figlio dress on her first day in the French Riviera. She paired her dress with golden Louboutins and a MiuMiu clutch. Her edgy and chic outfit was an overall punk-rock-inspired look.


•VIDYA BALAN:  Vidya Balan turned heads with her Sabyasachi-clad ethnic looks at her 2013 Cannes debut. The actress wore a maroon-black combination lehenga-Choli, dupatta and accessorised it with a bindi, jhumki and a watch. She made her debut as a jury member and wowed us with her choice of traditional wear.
