World Health Day 2022 ‘Our Planet, Our Health’

‘Life is not merely about being alive but being well’.

This World Health Day the core focus is on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being.

The theme of this World Health Day 2022 is, ‘Our Planet, Our Health’.

According to the WHO, ‘Health’ is fundamental to human happiness and well-being. It also contributes to economic development, since healthy people live longer and are more productive.

There are more than 13 million deaths around the world each year due to avoidable environmental causes. This includes the climate crisis which is the single biggest health threat, facing humanity. The climate crisis is also a health crisis.

World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7 to perceive the widespread contribution of our medical faculty and the success of the World Health Organisation.

The World Health Organisation convened the first World Health Assembly in 1948, which called for the enactment of World Health Day.

For the first time, World Health Day was held on April 7, 1950, and thereafter it is celebrated on the same date every year.

Over 90% of people breathe unhealthy air resulting from burning fossil fuels. The world is experiencing extreme weather, people are facing water scarcity, diseases are spreading farther and faster than ever before, systems that produced unhealthy foods and beverages are driving a wave of obesity, heart diseases, and cancers are seen more likely in people.

Breaking this circle of destruction for the planet, human health requires immediate action and corporate reforms for a healthy and existing tomorrow.

Besides being World Health Day, it is also the 75th day of the countdown to International Day of Yoga.

The ministry has drafted a 100-day countdown programme for the 8th International Day of Yoga wherein 100 organisations are promoting yoga in 100 places.

The Ministry mentions that they wish to inspire a Mass Movement for Health & Wellbeing through yoga in the 75-day countdown to International Day of Yoga 2022. Since the 8th International Day of Yoga is falling in Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav year, the ministry urges to observe the International Day of Yoga at 75 iconic sites across the country.
